Is Creatine Bad For Your Liver?
Some creatine detractors have long argued that creatine can damage the kidneys and the liver, though little in the way of proof has ever been offered to back up these claims. However, new research conducted by Dr. Sean Brosnan suggests that creatine supplementation can actually help keep the liver healthy. Thus, the question shouldn’t be is creatine bad for your liver, but is it good for your liver?
Fatty liver is the most common liver ailment, and is particularly prevalent among western societies which are known to over consume alcohol and indulge in poor diets and under exercise. Basically, the liver stores excessive amounts of fat which impairs the functioning of the liver which, if un-reversed, can have serious knock on effects for a person’s health.
Dr. Sean Brosnan, a biochemist conducted the study at Memorial University. He had his research team feed rats on a diet conducive to creating the conditions for a fatty liver. Some rats were simultaneously fed creatine monohydrate. At the end of 3 week period, the rats which were fed creatine monohydrate were the only ones which didn’t show signs of fatty liver development whilst the others did.
At this stage it’s believed that the creatine monohydrate causes certain genes to oxidize fat within the liver so it doesn’t accumulate.
There’s more testing to be done on this, particularly with humans, but this is a very important and interesting piece of research.
